Happiness

Happiness depends more on the inward disposition of mind than on outward circumstances.
Benjamin Franklin

A New Start

This past week we had the privilege of watching Haden be baptised in the wonderful name of Jesus. He had received the Holy Ghost several weeks ago at camp and was anxious to be baptised. We explained to Haden the awesome power of forgiveness and how his sins would be washed away. He so sweetly asked, "my black heart will now be white?" We are so proud of the new start Haden has made in his walk with God. I pray that God gives us wisdom as we help to lead his little life towards Christ. On a funny note, on the way to church I overheard Haden telling his sisters "after tonight I'm not going to do anything bad....well hopefully." We had a big laugh at that one.

Missing You

This week has been one of those weeks whee I really missed my Grandma. I miss and think about her everyday but this week has been even more difficult. I was telling Jay on our way home the other night from Haden's baptism, my Grandma would have been so proud of him. I always felt like my Grandma was my kids biggest fans. She was always encouraging them, and so proud of their accomplishments. When Jay and I married it was as if Haleigh and Haden had always been around. She would scold us when we would come and visit and didn't have the kids. As a mother that meant so much to me. I miss her terribly. The sweet way that she worshiped in church and how soft and inviting her hugs were. Grandma, my heart has been broken since the day that you left us, and although I know that you are in a better place I still selfishly want you back. Things just aren't the same......

High Flying

High Flying, Adored - 15-Year-Old Girl Pilots a Plane Coast to Coast

On Saturday, 15-year-old Kimberly Anyadike finished a record-breaking flight across the country, becoming what is believed to be the youngest African-American female to pilot an airplane from coast to coast. The adventurous teenager flew from Compton Woodley Airport in Compton, CA, to Newport News, VA ,and back, making thirteen stops along the way. Her flight companions were an adult safety pilot and Levi Thornhill, an 87-year-old World War II veteran who flew with the Tuskegee Airmen, an all African-American combat unit in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Part of the reason for Anyadike's voyage was to honor the Tuskegee Airmen, dozens of whom she met throughout the journey.

Anyadike learned to fly both an airplane and a helicopter at Tomorrow's Aeronautical Museum in Compton in an after-school program that offers aviation lessons to underprivileged and at-risk youth. The museum owns the plane she flew on this historical trip.

It was Anyadike's idea to fly cross-country. She knew it would take tremendous preparation, but she felt strongly that she could do it. The Tuskegee Airmen served as further motivation for the high-flying teen.

"They left such a great legacy," she said. "I had big shoes to fill. All they wanted to do was to be patriots for this country. They were told no, that they were stupid, that they didn't have cognitive development to fly planes. They didn't listen. They just did what they wanted to do."'

Robin Petgrave, the aeronautical museum's founder tried to temper Anyadike's enthusiasm. "I told her it was going to be a daunting task but she just said, 'Put it on. I got big shoulders.' "

Fun Times With Family

Over the fourth of July weekend we were so very blessed to have family from out of state come to visit. Jay's Uncle and Aunt from Arizona and his cousin and her family from Texas. They all arrived the evening of the fourth and we had a great dinner and fun time setting off fireworks. The next day the guys headed out to the beach early for some fishing and us girls took our time getting up and heading over. When we got to the beach we had to take them to one of our favorite places, Avila Valley Barn. The kids were able to feed the animals and we took a hay ride and picked fresh apricots. We also picked up some fresh fruit, strawberry pie and my favorite peach salsa!! YUM! The next day the guys were ready for some more fishing and we took off for some more fun! We went to San Luis and viewed the Mission which was beautiful. I absolutely love old church building and their history. We then headed to Morro Bay for some lunch and Giovanni's which was of course delicious! The kids even though it was freezing wanted to go get in the water which only lasted about twenty minutes, but they did have a blast!! Our last night there we met up with Jay's brother and sister n law for dinner. It was a great time of catching up for everyone. We had such a wonderful time. This was my first time meeting Jay's cousin Radona and her husband Jason. They are the sweetest people and have such a beautiful family! We miss them!! I always enjoy getting together with Uncle D and Aunt Jeanette. They too are some wonderful people. I'm looking forward to many more wonderful memories to come.

Freedom Isn't Free

Flag Pictures, Images and Photos

I watched the flag pass by one day
It fluttered in the breeze
A young soldier saluted it, and then
He stood at ease

I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He'd stand out in any crowd

I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years
How many died on foreign soil?
How many mothers' tears?

How many Pilots' planes shot down?
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No - Freedom isn't free

I heard the sound of taps one night,
When everything was still
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill

I wondered just how many times
That Taps had meant "Amen"
When a flag had draped a coffin
Of a brother or a friend

I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives

I thought about a graveyard at the
Bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No - Freedom isn't free!
